CASE STUDY: DIGITAL ELEKTRONIK - NEW TICKET MACHINE FOR ÖBB
Digital Elektronik GmbH
Digital Elektronik GmbH, headquartered in St. Leonhard near Salzburg, has been developing and manufacturing mechatronic complete solutions since 1978. The family-owned company covers the entire chain from hardware, mechanics and software through to series production and after-sales service.
01
Initial Situation
In 2020, Digital Elektronik submitted a bid for the development and production of more than 1,000 ticket machines for ÖBB and was awarded the contract as a full-service provider in 2021. A key component of the tender was the development of a device abstraction layer that serves as the interface between the sales application and the various hardware components of the ticket machine. These include banknote validators, coin systems, ticket printers and other peripheral devices. Since the development of such middleware requires specialized software expertise as well as extensive experience in hardware integration, Digital Elektronik brought us on board as an experienced partner. This allowed the requirements for flexibility, maintainability and long-term scalability of the ticket machine platform to be optimally implemented.
02
Collaboration
We were responsible for the development and maintenance of the middleware that abstracts the various hardware components of the ticket machines from the sales application. Additionally, we served as the technical point of contact for coordinating requirements with ÖBB and the manufacturers of the deployed hardware components, making a significant contribution to the successful integration of the overall system. The collaboration between Digital Elektronik and us was partnership-based, reliable and goal-oriented. While overall project responsibility remained with Digital Elektronik, we independently managed the technical coordination and alignment with the involved partners. Through direct collaboration with ÖBB and the component manufacturers, technical challenges were resolved swiftly and integrations implemented efficiently. In this project, we were able to contribute our strengths in the areas of software architecture, interface and middleware development, and technical project management. Digital Elektronik particularly valued the ability to coordinate requirements from different partners, abstract complex technical interdependencies, and develop robust, long-term maintainable solutions from them.
03
Result
Digital Elektronik was able to outsource the complete development of the device interface to us. We contributed independently to the project and acted autonomously. This allowed Digital Elektronik to focus on the development of the mechanics and electronics as well as on system integration. Furthermore, we handle the ongoing maintenance of the software, which is now in operation on over 1,000 ticket machines across Austria.
"who is a partner for us who consistently impresses with professionalism and a solution-oriented approach, even in a very challenging project."

CASE STUDY: DEVELOPMENT OF THE SUNBLIND BOX WITH WAGO
WAGO GmbH & Co. KG
Provider of electrical interconnection technology and automation solutions
01
Initial Situation
WAGO GmbH & Co. KG is an internationally leading provider of electrical interconnection technology and automation solutions. With around 9,000 employees worldwide and annual revenue of 1.24 billion euros (2024), WAGO is a true heavyweight in the industry. The idea for the Sunblind Box originated internally at WAGO: the goal was a decentralized automation solution for building shading, designed to be slim, flexible and, above all, time-saving in installation and commissioning. This is precisely where the highest costs arise in building automation. WAGO quickly recognized that the internal resources needed to implement these complex requirements were lacking. Additionally, the time factor was critical, as the goal was a rapid market entry.
02
Collaboration
We took over the development of the normative and technical solution concepts. Throughout the collaboration, we were able to continuously introduce optimizations to the solution. We also responded flexibly to emerging new requirements or requirement changes and successfully brought the project to completion. WAGO particularly valued the fact that everything came from a single source. We developed both the hardware and the software and handled verification as well as prototype construction. Finally, we also carried out the approval process and important certifications.
03
Result
With the Sunblind Box, WAGO successfully occupied a market niche. The product was very well received by the market, and the simple commissioning via NFC in particular met with consistently positive feedback. Internally, the solution is also considered a success: sales companies across Europe have added the Sunblind Box to their portfolio and are actively driving sales.
"We have always emerged stronger from difficult project phases, with a solution in hand."
Jan-Philipp Jansen
Product Manager at WAGO GmbH & Co. KG
